OIL AND WAX PAINTINGS ON CANVAS FROM SPRING 2013 MFA SEMESTER

These are two new paintings, very similar, as they are two versions of the same scene. The scene is from a photo that my professor's brother had taken. It is a photo taken of the first flight taking off from a New York airport after 9-11-2001. As we all remember , air traffic was stopped for a few days after that tragedy. This is the first flight outbound as air travel resumed. The flight was at sunrise.

THIS COLORFUL PAINTING PLAYS UP THE USE OF SIMULTANEOUS CONTRAST, THE PLACING OF WARM AND COOL OPPOSITE COLORS NEXT TO EACH OTHER. THIS GIVES A SPARKLING EFFECT. I ALSO HAVE CONTRASTED THE THICK IMPASTO WHITE PAINT WITH THE THIN TRANSPARENT PAINT OF THE  DEEP VIOLET TINGED SHADOWS. THE WHITE NAPKIN COMES FORWARD GIVING THE PAINTING GREATER DEPTH.

 Sunday we set our clocks to "Spring Forward". Hopefully our showers today will bring on the Spring flowers. This week, I have been seeing the tops of crocus and daffodil greens popping up in my garden. Surely the nice weather can't be far behind.

LUMINOUS ROSE BOUQUET

I have been experimenting with different techniques in floral paintings this winter. This is one of my favorites. I really like the transparent and opaque layers mixing together in the roses and the glass vase, creating a luminous halo around the bouquet. The background is textured a bit , in a neutral dark burnt umber color. It reminds me of leather, a nice foil for the feminine floral arrangement.
